Surfing & Water Sports
Nothing epitomises summer more than surfing at the Mount. Having fun on, or in, the water is a way of life here and you’re never too young or old to join in.
Warm ocean currents and mild temperatures all year round mean our beaches, harbours and estuaries see plenty of action. Whether you’re learning to surf, paddleboard, kayak or kite surf – or if you’ve been doing it all your life – we’ve got the perfect conditions for you.
The good news is you can find someone who is hiring the equipment you need at many Te Moananui ā Toi ׀ Coastal Bay beaches. Surf lessons in particular are easy to organise and are a great activity for the whole family during a beach holiday break. At Mount Maunganui’s Pilot Bay you can hire kayaks and other small water craft to explore the sheltered harbour, and similar gear is available in Ohope for those keen to paddle in the estuary there.
The wind can definitely pick up around the coast, making certain spots like Fergusson Park in Matua, Tauranga, a mecca for kite-surfers. No matter what activity you choose, make sure you slap on plenty of sunscreen and wear a life jacket when necessary.
