Mauao (Mount Maunganui) access and walking tracks are currently closed due to the weather event of 21 January 2026. Little Known Beaches

You probably already know that the Bay of Plenty by its very name has plenty of beaches and 55-kilometres of pristine coastline. You’ve probably also heard that everyone loves The Mount for a surf, swim and SUP. In a testament to that, Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach has been named New Zealand’s best beach by TripAdvisor for the seventh consecutive time. Don Allardice has spent a lifetime having fun in white water – whether in a kayak, raft or on a river sledge. But he reckons inflatable ‘riverbugs’ are the best way to ride river rapids in the Bay. “This is the most fun thing I’ve ever guided,” Don grins. “Partly because I enjoy the sport myself. Haiku Pathway Katikati

The Haiku Pathway in Katikati is a one-of-a-kind in New Zealand and unique outside of Japan. It features over 40 haiku poems, the vast majority engraved on to river boulders, alongside a pathway that meanders either side of Uretara Stream and forms a peaceful park in the heart of a bustling country town.
