Join us on the Sunday water releases & experience the spectacular Wairoa River gorge near Tauranga from a riverbug perspective. Share our passion for riverbug adventures, and help us to support regenerative tourism, community and healthy lifestyles.
The Wairoa (Long Water in Māori) flows through rapid filled bedrock gorge in the Kaimai Ranges near Tauranga, and is a favourite with whitewater enthusiasts when the water is released into the natural riverbed. Our Bug Sunday tour takes us on a unique journey through the lower gorge, with a fun 'roller–coaster' ride through the rapids – including a surf session on the legendary 'Wairoa Wave'.
The tour meets Sunday mornings near the Poripori Water Holes, allowing us to paddle and walk up river to the starting point before the water release arrives. Tours depart on Sundays Spring – Autumn. In small groups we offer top equipment, personal service & and unforgettable experience. Grade 2. Bring swimwear, towel & sun protection.
