A friend of mine who used to live in Tauranga mentioned this was a good place to eat when we were in town. So over the holidays in Janurary, we decided to go there. I rang and booked a table for 4 Janurary.  We arrived at our booking time of 6.30pm. There was a slight delay double checking our booking was cleared by our phone number. Maybe someone spelt our name wrong? Any way all was okay and were shown to a table near the doors with a really nice view of the marina. The tables outside were all taken. It was quite busy inside too.  My mother in law and wife had checked the menu beforehand so knew what they wanted, and I couldn't decide, but after a quick and clear explanation from the friendlt and smiley waitress, I decided. I inquired if a kids menu was available, but instead of been put off, the waitress was very accommodating and kindly offered to do a main menu at a kids size. She also asked if she wanted anything esle (drinks, etc..). This is makes such a difference when dining out, as it not only shows she is interested in us as patrons, but interested in her position too. We ordered drinks.  Phils Place has a nice feel, decor and the layout is easy and quite cool. Defintely has the musical element, but not bombarded with it. A good selection of Kiwi and Aussie music was playing through the system. It was neat.  Our meals were soon delivered and it seemed a shame to eat and destroy the peferctly and precise presesentation of all the meals in the process. The detail and thought in to the presentation was fantastic. And as for the portions, they were very generous indeed.   My mother in law had the King Salmon and commented it was very nice and one of the niceset she has had, and the tabbouleh was a great accompaniment.  My wife had the Chilli and Prawn lingunin and also said it was really nice, not overly hot or over spiced and delicious.  Our daughter had the kids size chicken and chips and she kept sating "yummy" while she was eating it so this was clearly enjoyed by her.  I had the Tarakihi and a basil besto potato mash with veges. Boy oh boy, was this bloddy good. Was the fish caught off the marina when we placed our menus? The fish was so moist, fresh, perfectly cooked and prepared. The addition of the vegetables was a great touch, and those too were crunchy and cooked well. I have eaten a lot of fish meals in my time and this one would have to be clearly one of the best of them.  The same friendly waitress came back and inquired a couple of times to see how things were - not because it was part of her job - but she was also interested - and all of the meals were fine. That was probably obvious when the plates were cleared and all of them were completely empty. She asked us if we wanted to see the dessert or drinks menu, and I was tempted especially with the tease she gave for the mint cheesecake - sounded divine! - we unfortunately had to leave the dessert for another time.  The chef and her/his team deserve much credit for a well thought out, prepared, presented dinner for all of us. They truly did a tremendous job.  The waitress who served us that night also deserves credit. She is a massive asset to the team and it does make so much difference when a restaraunt has friendly, helpful, chatty and similing staff who obviously enjoy their job.   If you are a Tauanga local and haven't been to Phils Place, get there as soon as you get the chance, because it is a great place to eat, with great food and great staff. If you are visiting or passing through Tauranga and wondering where you should go - wonder no more. Because you should go to Phil's Place because you will be rewarded with a truly magnificent dining experience. And if its a summer - try and get a table outside.  When we are back in Tauranga we will be back to Phil's Place, without a doubt. And next time I hope the mint cheesecake is still on the menu.

Service was disgusting, my 84 year old in laws were hurried to choose their options and then the old blonde lady hostess stood right beside my father in law to hurry him up eating his entree (which he didn't finish as he felt uncomfortable), she took his plate to the kitchen and came straight back with his meal.  When the last bite was gone she asked if she could have our table.. Food was ok but not great but service was non existent...

First time he for me. Nice spot with great outlook over mariner. But the food is a letdown. Price is high and that's OK if it's tasty but it was lacking in flavors. After hearing how good the food is it was a letdown. Serve not bad but far from what i would call good. Sorry but the Wow factor with not home the day we went.
