A rental car or motorhome is a great way to explore our region as you’ll have complete flexibility and control over where you want to go.
You can hire modern and reliable vehicles at both Tauranga and Whakatane airports (plus other locations around Tauranga’s CBD). Or pick one up at Auckland International Airport when you arrive from overseas.
A full driver’s licence from your home country or an international driving permit is required for car rentals in New Zealand.

You can easily catch a taxi (cab) in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Whakatane. Taxis will drive to smaller outlying towns but this is an expensive way to travel. Check with your driver before you begin whether they have credit card facilities available or cash only. You are not expected to tip a taxi driver in New Zealand.
Taxis can be found parked around town but it’s often easier to just book online or phone to order one. Uber is not yet available in the Bay of Plenty.

An organised tour is a great way to see all the sights. You can relax and fully enjoy the experience without the hassle of worrying about driving on unfamiliar roads. A full range of tours and their pick up/drop off points can be found at our i-SITE Visitor Information Centre at 95 Willow St in downtown Tauranga or phone 07 578 8103.
Cruise ship passengers can find a full range of tours available here.
A shuttle bus is provided just for cruise passengers
who wish to travel between Mount Maunganui and Tauranga’s CBD. The $10 return
trip departs from the port where your ship is berthed every 20-30 minutes from
Monday – Saturday.
Public buses in Tauranga are called Bay Hoppers. Buses run seven days a week and on all public holidays except Christmas Day and Good Friday.
This is a great way to travel around our biggest city, individual suburbs or between towns. Routes include all major shopping, dining and tourist destinations.
