After the biosecurity check at the Whakatane Yacht Club, we sail out to Moutohora/ Whale Island on the beautifully appointed catamaran, Centaurus. On arrival at the island, we launch the kayaks in a sheltered bay, giving everyone a chance to get comfortable, before heading around the island's wonderful coastline, past cliffs and sandy beaches and into sea caves. There are regular wildlife encounters with seals, penguins and sea birds and plenty of salty yarns before we land at the hot water beach where there's a chance to warm your toes and check out the geothermal rumblings. Morning tea is served on board the catamaran and a swim is always an option before we head back to Whakatane.
