Spend the day in Waihī Beach

Whether it’s a weekend escape or a relaxed day out at the beach, Waihī Beach offers the perfect balance of coastal charm, natural beauty, and must-visit destinations. From beachfront dining to hidden beaches, here are ten ways to make the most of this seaside paradise.

Start the day at Flatwhite café

Flatwhite has been an iconic part of the Waihī Beach community for nearly 20 years. The stunning beachfront location with views straight out towards Tuhua (Mayor) Island, ensures a relaxing vibe and space to enjoy the alfresco dining. The all-day menu offers all the classics with a coastal twist - think brunch, fresh seafood and brilliant coffee. Whether it’s a long lunch, a quick coffee, or pizza with the family, Flat White always delivers.

Walk the Trig Trail

The Trig Trail is one of Waihī Beach’s most popular short hikes, offering a rewarding climb through native bush to panoramic views over the coastline. Just minutes from the village, the 3km return track takes around 45–60 minutes depending on your pace and is a local favourite for both sunrise hikes and afternoon strolls.

Visit Sunday Homestore

Showcasing local, sustainable, and consciously made products, Sunday blends contemporary design with a calm, coastal aesthetic, capturing the essence of the coastal village. From ceramics and textiles to self-care and lifestyle pieces, everything is chosen to elevate the everyday.

Stop in at Beach Road Deli

A local favourite for good reason, Beach Road Deli is your go-to for coffee, smoothies, fresh sandwiches, and gourmet treats. Ideal for grabbing something quick and delicious to enjoy by the water.

Cycle from Waihī Beach to Bowentown

This popular coastal trail travels the length of Waihī Beach and Bowentown, weaving along the coast and beside the Athenree Estuary. There are plenty of places you can stop along the way, including playgrounds and cafés as well as much-earned swim and ice-cream spots.

Learn to surf

There’s no better place to learn the basics of surfing than at Waihī Beach. With its endless beach and gentle, rolling swells, conditions are ideal for beginners finding their feet in the water.

Stop in for a sweet treat at chocolate shop Chez Moi

Treat yourself at Chez Moi chocolate shop, where handcrafted treats are as beautiful as they are delicious. Swiss chocolatier Ines Hasler brings her expertise to every creation, carefully crafting truffles and chocolates that highlight local flavours through the lens of fine European technique. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am, it’s the perfect stop for an afternoon treat or a thoughtful (and delicious) gift.

Discover secluded Shelly Bay

Tucked away just beyond Bowentown, Shelly Bay is a peaceful, lesser-known beach cove with calm water, native bush surroundings, and a natural, unspoilt feel. With its crushed shell shoreline and clear, sheltered water, it’s a favourite for swimming, exploring, and escaping the summer crowds. Accessed on foot only from the end of Anzac Bay Reserve Carpark.

Enjoy dinner and a cocktail at the The Secret Garden

Tucked away in the heart of Waihī Beach, this hidden gem is where tropical dreams meet quirky charm. Kick back in Mexican cabanas and feast on colourful street food and tropical cocktails. The lush garden setting feels a world away, and offers a vibrant setting for weekly live bands and DJs - be sure to check out the familyaway and Sunday Jam sessions.
