Kick back, relax, you're in Pukehina

Pukehina is a beach-lover’s paradise, with kilometres of unspoilt and uncrowded coastline waiting for surfers, kite surfers, surf-casters and other surf-lovers to enjoy. It’s long been a favourite wind-surfing and boating spot. Then there’s the quiet and sheltered estuary on the opposite side of the peninsula, perfect for kayaking and young kids to paddle.

PLAYGROUNDS FOR YOUNG AND OLD

Outside of Pukehina’s kilometres of white-sand beach, you’ll find several playgrounds for kids big and small, including the flying fox in Maramarua Park (137 Pukehina Parade), a hit with little aviators.

If your kids are land-lubbers rather than sea-farers, take them to Midway Park (297 Pukehina Parade), where they can set sail on the pirate ship playground. Everyone can enjoy their workout of choice at Midway, where you’ll also find a walk through the wetland, tennis court, skate ramp, pump track, and outdoor fitness training equipment.

Boaties will enjoy the easy launch at the Ororoa boat ramp (708 Pukehina Parade) and kids will love the playground here too. Finish the day off with a BBQ on the shore-front picnic tables thanks to the well-maintained community facilities.

BEACH TIME

Pukehina’s beach is loved for its uncrowded, unfettered long stretch of white sand and surf. The underwater reefs and rocks attract plenty of fish for a surf caster’s catch, plus you’ll likely be one of the few with your line in the water. Surfers seeking fewer crowds head to Pukehina’s left and right-hand breaks and punchy waves.

For a change of pace, you can opt for the gentle Pacific Ocean swell or the gentle estuary waters, perfect for a kayak or paddle with the kids.

Pukehina Surf Rescue volunteer lifeguards patrol the beach seven days a week during the summer months; times vary so visit their new clubroom (end of Pukehina Parade) or check their website first. Always swim between the flags.
