The Kawerau King of the Mountain was established in 1955 as a friendly wager between a local Kiwi and Australian; to determine who could reach the summit of Putauaki (Mt. Edgecumbe) and back the fastest.
Of course it was the Kiwi (Jim Chadwick) who won the first dual and the event has been ingrained with legend since it’s humble beginnings.
It should not be underestimated the gruelling nature of this extremely steep climb up (and descent) of Putauaki.
It remains astonishing that the current record of 45:31; held by Manawahe local (Shay Williamson), was managed in such a fast time.
A Trans-Trasman Challenge still remains to this present date with our sister race in Pomona, Sunshine Coast; which adds a whole new dynamic to the competition.
Whatever you speed and ability, if you are looking for a challenge that takes so much but gives ten times back on completion, this is definitely for you.
