Harbour Cruises

Get a different perspective on Tauranga by taking a scenic cruise around our largest city’s harbour.

There are several different operators to choose from - jump aboard the historic MV Kewpie ferry or spend a couple of hours on Adventure Sail’s custom-built yacht.

Both vessels will provide you with a memorable adventure on our glistening harbour waters. Sit back, enjoy the view and sip on a cold drink while you listen to your skipper’s commentary on the area’s history and marine life found in Tauranga Harbour. Keep your eyes peeled for seabirds, blue penguins and the occasional fur seal or dolphin as your boat moves through the water.

A harbour cruise is a great way to get up close to the towering cruise ships which visit our port between October and April. Watch our local tug boats work their magic as they help these ships berth and hear about the astonishing facts and figures associated with each cruise liner.

Glimpse the busy operation at Port of Tauranga where cargo ships are loaded and unloaded seven days a week, and sail among the smaller boats anchored off Pilot Bay. If you’re lucky, you may see a ship entering or leaving the port while you’re onboard – their size and speed is all the more impressive from this vantage-point.

Stop off at Matakana Island which forms one side of Tauranga Harbour’s main entrance and sits directly opposite Mauao at the tip of Mount Maunganui’s peninsular. The Kewpie offers a hop on/hop off service to Matakana so you can enjoy an hour or two on the white sandy beach here before re-joining the next cruise. You’re not allowed to enter the island’s forest however, so you’ll need to stick to the beach. Take a picnic with you and enjoy a swim while you wait for the Kewpie to return.

Adventure Sail also offer beach picnic trips to Matakana, plus longer trips to offshore islands, overnight cruises and a 2-3 hour night cruise where you can see the twinkling lights of Tauranga city and the harbour’s channel markers – a totally different and spell-binding experience.

The Kewpie departs several times a day from the historic wharf at the beginning of Mauao’s base track at Pilot Bay. Children under 12 are free, so this is an affordable way to entertain the family for an hour. Seasonal departure times are available on their website.

Adventure Sail is based at Tauranga’s Sulphur Point Marina and harbour cruise bookings can be made through their website.
