Bowentown Beach

Bowentown is a popular spot for camping in the Bay of Plenty. With the open ocean on one side and Tauranga’s harbour on the other, there are plenty of places to explore and savour the warm coastal waters.

Bowentown sits at the southern end of a long peninsula and is blessed with two contrasting beaches for you to enjoy.

On one side sits the open ocean, with several kilometres of white sand and rolling surf that comes crashing into shore. This is an ideal spot for surfing, wind & kite surfing, swimming in the waves or enjoying a long walk and some peace and quiet.

There are multiple carparks and beach access points off Seaforth Rd, and you’ll find public toilets and picnic tables in front of the Waihi Coastguard building (just past the entrance to the Bowentown Beach Holiday Park).

Short walkways will lead you through the sand dunes to the beach itself, and information panels urge you to keep an eye out for endangered New Zealand dotterels who build their nests on the sand in this area.

If you drive to the very end of the peninsula you will find Bowentown Domain and the beautiful Anzac Bay.

A lovely sand beach curves around the edge of this bay and the turquoise water gently laps at the shore. This is the perfect spot for young children and those who want to swim in calm waters.

The area is surrounded by pohutukawa trees which bloom into life every December, bringing a mass of colour to the otherwise green surroundings.

If you’re launching a boat or kayak here, you’ll need to be mindful of the fast-flowing water through the nearby harbour entrance that runs between Anzac Bay and the northern tip of Matakana Island.

A boat ramp can be found a short 2 minute drive away on Pio Rd at the Bowentown Boating and Sport Fishing Club.

Freedom camping is allowed in motorhomes only in the Bowentown Domain/Anzac Bay carpark for most of the year but is prohibited from the third week of December through to Waitangi Day on February 6. Picnic tables and public toilets are provided.

Bowentown is a quiet spot, off the beaten track and away from our region’s busier beaches. It’s an easy 45 minute drive north from Tauranga, or a 10 minute drive south from Waihi Beach, and is a wonderful place to escape the crowds.
