Mauao (Mount Maunganui) Base Track
Mauao’s 3.4km base track is a natural playground for fitness and enjoying fabulous views and native trees and animals.
The track allows walkers and joggers to pass by scenery ranging from remote beaches to rocky cliffs. There’s also a good chance to see animals such as sea lions or whales from various points on the path or watch ships come in and out of the busy Port of Tauranga.
The popularity of the track is evident on any given day of the year, rain or shine, summer or winter the path is rarely empty. In January 2006, nearly 110,000 people strolled around the base track – the highest month on record since counters were installed.
The average yearly figure for users of the base track is a staggering 700,000 people.
