Rory French is a local sculptor from Mt Maunganui whose wooden sculptures are a mix of contemporary Maori geometry with a conceptual New Zealand feeling. At a young age, Rory developed signs of Stargardt Disease, a degenerative eye disease which has nearly caused complete loss of his vision.

However, this has not stopped this talented and such an inspirational artist from enjoying all that Aotearoa has to offer.

Rory’s exhibition “Emergence” is a very exciting event for him as it is his very first exhibition and we are so excited to share his passion for creativity with our visitors.

From the artist: "Shapes of my work represent a modern approach to a traditional art form unique in Aotearoa. I use many tools during the process of creating my work, from chainsaws to chisels
I subtract wooden matter in order to create outstanding wooden masterpieces.

I am often on the hunt for natural New Zealand timber which is my preferable medium and I pride myself on my latest work that I carved from Ancient Swamp Kauri."

The impressive pieces use the amazing wood which has a complex colour and twisted intricate wooden grain, unique to New Zealand. The Ancient Kauri he uses can often be over 30,000 years old.

An exhibition not to be missed!
