This laid-back coastal settlement is best known for its 16km-long white sand beach which curves along the coast between Mount Maunganui in the west, and the Kaituna River in the east.

Papamoa is an ideal place to fish or surf. Your whole family can enjoy an ocean swim and the beach is patrolled by well-trained surf lifeguards during the summer months.

The area’s wide, flat plains stretch inland before rising dramatically up into the Papamoa Hills. Today the Papamoa Hills Regional Park (Te Rae o Papamoa) provides plenty of opportunities for you to get outdoors and explore this fascinating area.

Early Maori settlers built many fortified pa on top of these hills, and treasured the prime position overlooking the plains and coastline below. Explore these archaeological sites and walk along the terraced pa remains to reach the summit and admire the endless view.

In contrast to lazy days on the beach, you can definitely get your adrenalin pumping in Papamoa. Experience the thrill of a wind-powered go-kart (known as a Blokart). These machines were invented right here and are now exported around the world. Visit their home-base at Blokart Heaven and race around the purpose-built track. Or have a go on their new electric Drift Karts for some sideways fun. Both activities are suitable for those aged 8 and over.

Indulge in some retail therapy at Papamoa Plaza or Fashion Island where you can snap up some excellent bargains on women’s fashion, in particular.

Dine at a range of cafes, restaurants and fast food outlets. Or sample some of the best street food you will find anywhere in the Bay at ‘Dinner in the Domain’ – a weekly artisan food market held in the Papamoa Domain every Thursday night between November and March.

Public transport is available every half hour or hour by bus, connecting Papamoa with Mount Maunganui and Tauranga’s CBD.
