For the Active & Adventurous
Tauranga always rates highly with cruise ship passengers because there are so many great things to do here.
Stretch your legs and explore our beautiful beach-side suburb of Mount Maunganui, or head further afield across the Western Bay of Plenty or inland to Rotorua or Hobbiton.
We’ve put together this list of recommended activities to help you plan an unforgettable day:
Take a tour
You will normally have 10 to 12 hours in port here so there’s plenty of time to join one of our local tours. This is the best way to experience Maori culture, geothermal sights, the Hobbit movie set and our charming coastal towns and tourist attractions.

Book an activity
Swim with dolphins, go skydiving, book a fishing charter or take a helicopter tour. Spaces are limited and some activities depart early, so it pays to pre-book.
You’ll have no trouble spotting our iconic mountain, Mauao, from your ship. Walk around its 3.4km base track (one of the most popular short walks in New Zealand) or climb to the summit. There are several well-maintained paths to choose from and you’ll be rewarded with amazing views right across our city and coastline.
Relax on the beach
Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach (on the ocean side of the
peninsula) is just a 10 minute walk away. Enjoy gorgeous white sand and rolling
surf. Or stroll along the Pilot Bay boardwalk right in front of your ship and
dip your toes into the calm waters.
You will find plenty of boutique shopping just a 5 minute walk away on Maunganui Rd. Alternatively, catch a $10 shuttle bus over our harbour bridge to shop in Tauranga’s CBD. Read more about what shopping options are available off the ship.
Soak in a hot pool
Walk down to Mount Maunganui’s Hot Salt Water Pools
complex at the very base of Mauao (our tall mountain). Relax in one of the
soothing main pools or book a private spa. Temperatures range from 32°C to
40°C. Therapeutic massage is also available, and young children have their own
toddler pool and slide to enjoy.
Buy an ice-cream or wine & dine
There are plenty of places to eat on shore. Mount Maunganui has some legendary ice-cream parlours as well so treat yourself to one as you stroll along the beach.
Visit Downtown Tauranga
Our city’s CBD is a 10 minute drive away from your ship. Catch a shuttle bus from the port and visit Tauranga’s Art Gallery, Cargo Shed Creative Arts Market, The Elms Historic House and more. Kids will love our Hairy Maclary sculptures and waterfront playground on The Strand.
Go to market
If you’re in port on the first Saturday of each month don’t miss Mount Maunganui’s Little Big Markets. This artisan craft and food market is brimming with gorgeous gift ideas and hand-made works of art on the corner of Maunganui Rd and Matai St between 9am – 2pm.
Catch a bus
Our local Bay Hopper buses are an easy, affordable way
to get around our city and see our smaller outlying rural towns. Check out the
daily timetable here.
Use our free Wi-Fi
Local wireless broadband provider EOL has a network of Wi-Fi hotspots around Mount Maunganui and The Strand in downtown Tauranga which you can use for free. Simply search your Wi-Fi options for ‘EOL’. Grab a coffee and check your email while sitting on the beach or at a local café.
