New Zealand is a beautiful country, help us keep it that way. Please respect our unique flora, fauna, beaches and rivers. Be active and get involved in caring for the environment. It is everyone’s responsibility.
Freedom camping is permitted in many places in New Zealand but the rules vary in each community. Signs will usually indicate where you are not allowed to camp. To be certain about local camping guidelines, we recommend you ask at an i-SITE information centre, Department of Conservation visitor centre or holiday park before you stop for the night. Or download a New Zealand camping app (find details at ) www.freedomcamping.org
In the spirit of Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) we ask that you plan a holiday committed to leaving no trace of your trip for the collective benefit of current and future generations. ‘Camping Responsibly’ is not using the side of the road or the bush as a toilet – please use onboard or public facilities.
For more information regarding freedom camping, as well as regional information please visit the Tourism Industry Aotearoa FREEDOM CAMPING website.
