Waitomo joins Great New Zealand Touring Route

The Great New Zealand Touring Route marketing group has been strengthened by the recent confirmation of Waitomo District Council as a full member.

The Great New Zealand Touring Route (GNZTR) is an international marketing alliance involving Central North Island regions who work together to market two touring routes: Pacific Coast Highway and Thermal Explorer Highway. It is also the only regional marketing alliance in New Zealand to produce a combined product manual, employ a sales executive and have a dedicated suite of collateral including maps and a website. 

Visitors can choose to follow either the Pacific Coast Highway through the coast into the regions of The Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, or inland on the Thermal Explorer Highway to the Ruapehu region, Lake Taupo, Rotorua and Waitomo. 

Cathy Davidson, Manager of Community Development for the Waitomo District Council says the district has a lot of tourist attractions to be promoted internationally. “The Waitomo District has a lot to offer and we feel we have so many unique attractions that we can hold our own as a brand. The Great New Zealand Touring Route fits in well with our strategic plans for both an international and national presence.”

Tim Burgess, Chairman of the Great New Zealand Touring Route, says the addition of the Waitomo is a great step for GNZTR.

“We’re delighted to welcome the Waitomo District as a full member of GNZTR,” Tim said. “Waitomo has a lot to offer visitors and its activities and attractions area a good fit with other regions of the GNZTR.”

The Waitomo District Council joins other full members of GNZTR: Tourism Coromandel, Tourism Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay Inc, Destination Rotorua, Visit Ruapehu and Destination Lake Taupo.
