Many of the region's garden owners work hard to keep their gardens in top shape for the biennial Bayleys Garden and Artfest event (next held in 2008). There are also public gardens for are a nice day out and about.

Katikati Bird Gardens Attractions Bay Of Plenty Gardens Tauranga Gardens, lilly ponds, huge trees, bird avairies, wetlands, cafe, art gallery and boutique accommodation. These beautiful gardens on the Tauranga harbourside are a unique slice of paradise.

The Katikati Bird Gardens and Cafe is a beautiful, 30+ year old privately owned 10 acre park on the edge of the Tauranga inner harbour near Tauranga in the Bay Of Plenty. www.thebirdgardens.co.nz

The extensive plantings include a rose garden, a conifer garden, lily ponds and mature trees from all around the world. Exotic pheasants, peacocks and doves follow as you wander through the gardens.

The gardens extend down to wetland areas home to a shag colony and intermittant home to Royal Spoonbills and other natives.

Visitors are encouraged to hand-feed the ducklings and doves.

Enjoy lunch in the terrace café, visit the gift shop and relax.
Golf cart tours of the gardens are available. Slf drive Golf carts are also available.

The Gardens are open daily from 10am-4.30pm.
Winter hours (June, July and August) 10am-4.00pm on weekends and school holidays only.

Groups can be accommodated by appointment year round. The 45 minute paved walk is on mostly all weather sealed paths with other lawns, paths and dells to explore off piste. Lunch and or tea can be taken in the cafe with seating for around 50.

The Bird Gardens are situated at the end of Walker Road East, directly off the Pacific Coast Highway (SH2) 7 kilometres south of Katikati, only 25 minutes from downtown Tauran
